Trump Signs Laken Riley Act into Law, Honors Victim’s Family

President Donald Trump marked the first legislative achievement of his second term by signing the Laken Riley Act into law during an emotional ceremony at the White House.

The legislation, named after Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was tragically killed by a Venezuelan immigrant in the U.S. illegally, aims to tighten immigration enforcement by mandating the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with specific crimes.

The East Room was filled with members of Congress, administration officials, and the Riley family, as Trump praised Laken.

He described the bill as a “landmark law,” emphasizing its potential to save countless American lives.

The Laken Riley Act expanded federal immigration authorities’ power to detain and deport immigrants who are arrested or charged with crimes, including theft or assault.

It also empowers state attorneys general to sue the federal government for lapses in immigration enforcement that result in harm.

For Trump, the bill represents a continuation of his hardline immigration agenda, which he emphasized during his campaign and in his inaugural address.
